Dhaka, Bangladesh — The family of Shuvro, former president of the BUET unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), has called for a fresh investigation into his death on 4 June 2019. They allege that the initial police inquiry left many critical questions unanswered.
Although police classified the death as a suicide, the family says no comprehensive investigation was conducted. They state that Shuvro had business partnerships with Siddiqui Nazmul Alam, Shariful Hoque, Amin Uddin, Manik Mia, Abuzar Ahmed Foysal, and SM Zakir Hossain. After the incident, some partners alleged that Shuvro and Foysal had misplaced business funds, but Foysal has remained unreachable since the incident.
Reporters attempted to contact Foysal directly but failed. They then contacted Foysal’s family. His family said, “We don’t want to say anything. We lost Shuvro, but we don’t want to lose my son, my grandson, and my daughter-in-law.”
Reporters also contacted Shuvro’s wife, who currently lives abroad. Over the phone, she said she does not want to “risk her life,” but added, “I want a proper investigation into my husband’s death. I was forced to leave the country, but I still want a proper investigation.”
Shuvro’s family says they too were forced to leave the country out of fear and uncertainty after his death.
Speaking over the phone, the family said they simply want the truth to come out and urged authorities to reopen the case for a full and impartial investigation.
